How to Make a Japanese PSN Account and Redeem a Japan PSN Card

Apartment 507

A Japanese PlayStation Network account opens the Japanese PlayStation Store, with its own catalogue of games, add-ons and in-game items. This guide explains how to make a Japanese PSN account on the web, PS5 or PS4, how to add it to your console as a second user, and how to top up its wallet with a Japan PSN card code. The steps, menu names and limits below were checked against PlayStation's official pages in October 2026. PlayStation sometimes renames menus, so if a label looks slightly different on your screen, look for the closest match.

Things to know before you start

  • The country/region is permanent. You choose it when you create the account, and PlayStation says it cannot be changed after the account has been created. An existing US, UK or other account cannot be switched to Japan; a Japanese account is always a new, separate account.
  • Enter accurate details. PlayStation asks you to add the correct country/region when you sign up. If you live in Japan, for example as an expat, student or long-term visitor, Japan is the right choice. Japan PSN cards are used under PlayStation's terms of service for Japan, so read and accept those terms before you buy or redeem a card.
  • Your date of birth cannot be changed later, so enter it carefully.
  • Codes must match the account. PlayStation says voucher codes and the account's country/region must match. A Japan PSN card only works on an account whose country/region is Japan, and codes from other regions will not work on a Japan account.
  • Purchases stay on the account. PlayStation does not allow funds or content to be transferred between accounts, so anything you buy on the Japan account cannot be moved to an account from another region.
  • Wallet limit. PlayStation Japan's official notice for its prepaid wallet lists the wallet charge limit (チャージ上限金額) as 60,000 yen. Check your current balance before you redeem several cards in a row.
  • CERO Z titles. On the Japanese PlayStation Store, games rated CERO Z are for players aged 18 and over and need a credit card registered to the account. The full price is charged to that card whatever your wallet balance is, so a Japan PSN card cannot be used to buy them.

How to make a Japanese PSN account on the web

Creating an account is free, and PlayStation says you don't need to provide any payment details. Signing up in a web browser lets you type your email address and password with a full keyboard, and you can then sign in on your console.

  1. Go to PlayStation's Account Management page and select Create New Account.
  2. Enter your details and preferences, selecting Next on each screen. This is where you choose Japan as the country/region and enter your date of birth, preferred language, sign-in ID (email address), password and Online ID.
  3. Check your inbox for the verification message from PlayStation and follow its instructions to verify your email address.

The full official walkthrough is on PlayStation's How to create an account page.

Add the Japanese account as a second user on PS5

The Japan account is added as a separate user, so your main account stays as it is.

  1. Go to the home screen and select your profile picture.
  2. Select Switch User > Add User > Get Started.
  3. Select Create an Account from the sign-in screen. If you already made your Japan account on the web, sign in with it on this screen instead and skip the next two steps.
  4. Enter the necessary information and choose Japan as the country/region.
  5. Verify your email address using the message PlayStation sends you.

Want to play games bought on the Japan account from your main profile? While signed in as the Japan user, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and select Enable. According to PlayStation's console sharing page, anyone who uses that PS5 can then play games and media the account has purchased and downloaded. It can be turned on for one PS5 at a time.

Add the Japanese account as a second user on PS4

  1. Press and hold the PS button to open the quick menu.
  2. Select Power > Switch User > New User > Create a User.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to create the account.
  4. Enter the necessary information and choose Japan as the country/region.
  5. Verify your email address.

How to redeem a Japan PSN card

Each card is a 12-digit code, and each code can be used once. Sign in with your Japanese account first, then follow the steps for your device. If your PlayStation Store is shown in Japanese, the menu names from PlayStation's Japanese help page are given in brackets.

On PS5

  1. Go to PlayStation Store and press the triangle button to open the menu.
  2. Select ... (More) > Redeem Code (その他 > コード番号の入力).
  3. Carefully enter the 12-digit code and select Redeem (引き換え). The balance is added to your wallet.

On PS4

  1. Go to PlayStation Store, scroll to the bottom of the sidebar and select Redeem Codes (コード番号を入力する).
  2. Carefully enter the 12-digit code and select Continue (続ける), then Confirm (確定) or Yes (はい).

In a web browser

  1. Go to PlayStation Store and select your profile at the top of the screen.
  2. Select Redeem Code (コードを引き換え) from the drop-down menu.
  3. Carefully enter the 12-digit code and select Continue (続ける).

In the PlayStation App

  1. Select the PS Store icon, then the menu icon on the right side of the screen.
  2. Select Redeem Code (コード番号の入力).
  3. Carefully enter the 12-digit code and select Continue (続ける).

These steps follow PlayStation's official redeem a voucher code page.

If a code is not accepted

  • Check that you are signed in to the Japan account. Funds redeemed on the wrong account cannot be moved.
  • Check that you entered all 12 digits correctly. PlayStation voucher codes always have 12 digits; a 10-digit code is a different kind of code that is only entered at checkout.
  • Check the PlayStation status page. If there are no network problems but the code still fails, sign out of PlayStation and sign back in to refresh your session, then try again.

FAQ

Can I make a Japanese PSN account from outside Japan?

PlayStation's sign-up asks you to add the correct country/region, and PlayStation's US terms of service say you must select your country or region of residence. The Japanese PSN terms add that PlayStation cannot provide account support if your registered country/region differs from where you actually live. You also can't change the country/region later.

So a Japanese account is for people who live in Japan. If you live in Japan, including as a foreign resident, choose Japan and follow the steps in this guide. If you live elsewhere, register the country/region where you live, not your country of citizenship. Japan PSN card codes only work on accounts registered in Japan.

Can I change my existing PSN account to Japan?

No. PlayStation does not allow an account's country/region to be changed after it is created. To use the Japanese PlayStation Store you need a separate account with Japan selected at sign-up.

Will a Japan PSN card work on my US or European account?

No. PlayStation voucher codes can only be redeemed in the same PlayStation Store region as the account, so a Japan PSN card works only on an account whose country/region is Japan.

Can I move games or wallet funds to my main account later?

No. Funds and content cannot be transferred between PlayStation accounts, so plan your Japanese purchases with that in mind.

Does the wallet balance expire?

PlayStation Japan's official prepaid payment notice lists the expiry for both the wallet and PlayStation Store cards as indefinite (無期限).

Can I buy CERO Z games with a Japan PSN card?

No. CERO Z content on the Japanese PlayStation Store has to be paid for with a credit card registered to the account, so wallet funds cannot be used for it.

Ready to top up?

Once your Japanese account is set up, choose the amount you need from our Japan PSN card collection of official codes. Codes are delivered by email: verified customers get instant email delivery, and first orders need a one-time verification, which you can complete on our account verification page. Playing on Switch too? See our Japan Nintendo eShop cards.
