Google Play Japan Gift Card: Who Can Redeem It and How
Apartment 507Share
A Google Play Japan gift card adds yen to the Google Play balance of an account whose Google Play country is Japan. You can then spend it in the Japanese Google Play Store on apps and games, books, movies and some subscriptions. Google Play is stricter about redeeming Japan codes than most other services, so before you pick a code from our Google Play Japan gift card collection, check who can redeem one and how. Every Google rule, step and limit below was checked against Google's official help pages in October 2026, and the help pages are linked so you can check them yourself.
Who can redeem a Google Play Japan gift card?
This card is meant for people who already have a genuine Japan Google Play account and are in Japan, for example people who live there. Google's About Google Play gift cards and Fix problems with Google Play gift cards pages explain why:
- Cards are tied to one country. Google says Play gift cards may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were purchased. A Japan card works only in yen, on an account whose Google Play country is Japan.
- Your account country must match. The country listed in your Google Play account must match the country where the gift card is offered, and the card's currency must match your payments profile settings.
- You must be in Japan. To redeem a gift card, Google says you must be present in the country where it was purchased. To spend Play balance, you must be present in the country where it was redeemed.
That makes these codes a good fit for residents of Japan, including expats and students, whose Google Play country is already Japan. If your account is set to another country, the code will not work on it. We can email a code to you anywhere, but that does not change Google's rules, and we do not recommend any workaround that breaks Google's terms.
Things to know before you start
- Code format. Google says redemption codes are typically a 16-digit combination of numbers and letters. Enter yours without spaces or dashes.
- Balance limit. Google lists a maximum Google Play balance of 200,000 yen for Japan, and you cannot redeem a code if it would take your balance over the limit for your country.
- No expiry. Google's Japanese help page says Google Play balance has no expiration date.
- What it pays for. For Japan, Google's What you can buy with your Google Play balance page lists apps, books, movies, newsstand and subscriptions. Balance cannot be used for hardware from the Google Store or to top up Google Pay or another payment method, and some subscriptions do not accept it.
- Android and Google Play only. Google says Play gift cards can only be used on Android devices or in the Google Play Store. If you use an iPhone or iPad with a Japan Apple Account, our Japan Apple gift cards may be what you need instead.
Our extra account checks
Google may refuse a code when the details on your account do not match Japan. The checks below come from our own store notes, not from Google's help pages, so please run through them before you buy:
- Your Google account is registered to an address in Japan.
- Your registration details, such as your name, are written in Japanese, with no characters from other languages.
- Your account language is set to Japanese.
- Your postal address and your account settings line up with each other and with Japan.
How your Google Play country is set
Your Google Play country decides which store you see. Google says it determines what content you find in the store and in apps, and that apps, games and other content can vary by country or region. In the Play Store app, the countries on your account are listed under Country and profiles, and adding a country means adding a payment method from that country. Your Google Play balance is linked to your Google Play country, so it stays with the country where you redeemed it.
To see which country you are on, Google suggests signing in to Google Pay, clicking Settings at the top and finding Country/Region under Payments profile. Google says this shows your current Play country. The legal country of an existing payments profile cannot be changed, so if you move to another country you need to create a new payments profile for it.
Can you change your Google Play country to Japan?
Only if you meet all of the conditions on Google's How to change your Google Play country page:
- You are in Japan. To set up a new country or region, Google says you must be in that location. The Japanese version of the page says you must live there (居住).
- You have a payment method from Japan.
- At least 90 days have passed since you first set your Google Play country, or since your last change. Google adds that additional restrictions may apply in some cases.
- You are not a member of a Google Family group, because family members cannot change their Google Play country.
You may still see older advice that the Play country can be changed only once a year. Google's current help page gives a wait of at least 90 days instead, so go by the page itself.
If you have moved to Japan and meet these conditions, follow Google's steps in the Google Play Store app. Japanese menu names are in brackets.
- On your Android device, open the Google Play Store app.
- At the top right, tap the profile icon.
- Tap Settings (設定) > General (一般) > Account and device preferences (アカウントとデバイスの設定) > Country and profiles (国とプロファイル).
- Tap Japan.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to add a Japanese payment method.
Google says your profile can take up to 48 hours to update. If you already have a Japan profile, open the same Country and profiles screen and tap Japan to switch to it. If the option is missing, Google gives three reasons: you changed your country in the last 90 days, you are not currently in a new country, or you are a member of Google Family.
Before you switch, know what you leave behind. Google says balance from your old country cannot be used in the new one (it works again if you change back), you lose your Google Play Points and your level does not carry over, current subscriptions stay on your old payments profile unless you cancel them, and you may lose access to some books, movies, TV shows, games and apps.

How to redeem a code on play.google.com
- On your computer, go to play.google.com/redeem.
- Enter your code.
- Click Redeem.
- Review the account that will receive the balance.
- Click Confirm.
You can also redeem while making a purchase: go through checkout until you see the payment method, select the down arrow next to it, choose Redeem code, enter your code and follow the on-screen instructions.
If your code is not accepted
- Check that you typed the code correctly, with no spaces or dashes and the right letters.
- Check that you are signed in to your Japan account, that your Play store currency is yen, and that you are in Japan. Google says that if you are travelling outside the country where the card was purchased, you may need to wait until you return to redeem it.
- If the code was already redeemed, it cannot be redeemed again. Make sure you are signed in to the same account you used when you redeemed it, and check that no friends or family members who had access to the code redeemed it.
- If your balance has reached its limit, spend some of it, wait 24 hours and try again.
- Go through our account checks above. If the code still will not redeem, contact us with your order number.
FAQ
Will a Google Play Japan gift card work on my US, UK or other account?
No. The country in your Google Play account must match the country where the card is offered, and the card's currency must match your payments profile settings. A Japan card needs an account whose Google Play country is Japan.
Can I change my Google Play country to Japan from outside Japan?
No. Google only lets you set up a new country while you are in that country and have a payment method from there, which is why these codes are meant for people with a genuine Japan Google Play account.
I am visiting Japan. Can I use one?
Only if your Google Play country is Japan. Adding Japan needs a Japanese payment method, and after any change you must wait at least 90 days before changing again. Switching also leaves your old country's balance behind and you lose your Play Points. Google also says you must be in the country where the balance was redeemed to spend it, so the balance is meant to be used in Japan.
Does the balance expire?
No. Google's Japanese help page says Google Play balance has no expiration date.
